Who Needs Tooth Restoration?

While oral health has greatly improved for many people over the last few years, factors such as age, decay, trauma, or wear can create dental issues for anyone. A tooth restoration may be as simple as a dental filling replacement or may involve replacing an entire set of teeth. We understand that prevention of dental issues is ideal, but if you require a tooth restoration, our dentists are ready to help.

When you need teeth restored or repaired, early intervention can help us administer the appropriate treatment before the issue becomes worse. We can restore both the function and appearance of your teeth, which can help you eat without worry and smile when you want to.

Tooth Restoration at The Dental House

Strong teeth structure and healthy gums build the foundation for oral health; therefore, our goal is to reestablish the function of your teeth so they are in the best possible working condition. Various types of tooth restorations include dental fillings, crowns, bridges, dentures, and implants. When you need a tooth restored, we will do a full exam and evaluation to determine the extent of damage and the ideal solution. We will prepare your tooth to ensure the enamel is supported enough and to ensure the restoration will bond easily and effectively for durability.

Direct and Indirect Restorations

Teeth that are chipped, cracked, broken, or otherwise damaged can lower your quality of life by interfering with everyday activities like eating. Our team at The Dental House will find the ideal solution to restore function to your mouth and teeth so you can smile again. When considering tooth restorations, we will either choose direct or indirect restorations.
Direct Restorations -Tooth Restoration - Gisborne, Macedon & Riddells Creek - Gisborne Dental House

Direct Restorations

are often completed in a single visit and consist of a dental filling. The material is chosen depending upon the cavity solution we find appropriate. Once your tooth is prepared, a soft and malleable filling is placed into the tooth to fill a hole or cavity which is then set using a safe heating method.

Indirect Restorations -Tooth Restoration - Gisborne, Macedon & Riddells Creek - Gisborne Dental House

Indirect Restorations

include those that are created outside of your mouth such as dental inlays, onlays, veneers, crowns, bridges, and dentures. During an office visit, we will take the appropriate information such as moulds of your teeth or 3D scans, which are then sent to a lab where they will be used to customize your restoration. You may be fitted with a temporary prosthesis to protect the prepared tooth or area and then return for another visit in which we place the restoration. If you are receiving a dental implant, we may require a few visits to ensure proper healing and a good fit for your new tooth.

The Process of Creating and Fitting Restorations

Tooth restorations may be created from a variety of materials including silver, composite resin and porcelain, gold, cobalt-chrome, and glass ionomer cement. The material is applied directly to your tooth during a direct restoration, and indirect restorations are created by a dental technician in a lab and fitted at a later date.

To properly fit the restoration, your tooth or teeth will need to be prepared. The dentist may remove decay or structurally unsound parts of your tooth so that you have a healthy and solid tooth foundation. You may be fitted with a temporary prosthesis while you wait for your next appointment where you will get your permanent restoration.

You will be updated on all steps required and made as comfortable as possible during all of your visits. We will discuss all options with you because you are the most important person in the process. Feel free to ask questions and your dentist will always be available to answer. We want to ensure you receive the best solution for tooth function, aesthetics, and of course, your budget.

Are There Risks with Tooth Restorations?

As with any medical treatment, there are risks involved. The risks of a tooth restoration will depend upon the extent of the original damage, the tooth structure and the type of restoration you choose. Some common risks are that deep cavities can lead to hot and cold sensitivity and pain, which may require root canal treatment in the future if it does not subside. Weak tooth structure may lead to complications that can affect it in the future.

Dental implants have the highest risk because they require minor surgery to place them. The risks may include excessive bleeding, flat breakdown, destructive inflammation, and failure to integrate, or implant failure.

Our team of experienced dentists at The Dental House at Gisborne are aware of all risks and so do our best to mitigate them. We want to provide you with the best outcome and will work to improve the structure of your teeth with restorations that will last long and look great.
