General Anaesthetic for Wisdom Teeth
General Anaesthetic for Wisdom Teeth
Last Friday, our new patient Joseph from Sunbury, came in for a checkup because his jaw was bothering him. We discovered that he had wisdom teeth that were impacted, and I recommended that he have his wisdom teeth removed. He felt nervous about this so asked about general anaesthetic for his wisdom teeth removal.
Wisdom teeth are the last molars, found at the very back of the mouth. There is often not enough room for them, and this results in pain, gum issues and cavities. If your dentist has recommended their removal, there are a few options which are available for this procedure.
Firstly, wisdom tooth removal, if simple, can be performed with local anaesthetic in the dental chair. This is often for simple extractions, with straight wisdom teeth and minimal surgery. There is usually a short recovery time and lower costing involved. If the patient is anxious, nitrous oxide or “happy gas” can be used in conjunction with local anaesthetic to ease anxiety and make the procedure more comfortable for the patient.
There is also the option of a general anaesthetic for any complex surgeries, impacted wisdom teeth, or for patients severe dental anxiety. This usually involves higher cost and a longer recovery time, however is necessary for some cases and can help with minimising discomfort during a long procedure. General anaesthetic or sleep dentistry allows the patient to be unconscious or asleep during an entire dental treatment. The medicine used to induce sleep is administered through an IV line and monitored during the surgery by a professionally trained anaesthetist. It is done in a purpose built clinical theatre or hospital setting so that all precautions are taken and if any complications should arise, the doctors can quickly intervene.
Recovery from wisdom teeth removal often ranges from 2 days for simple surgeries, to 2 weeks for more complex surgeries performed under general anaesthetic.
