After-Care for Your Dental Implants

Get a ride to the office and arrange for a ride home to allow the effects of sedation to wear off
Be sure to get plenty of rest to allow your body to fully heal
Do not smoke as this can increase the risk of implant failure
Do not drink through straws
Avoid very hot foods and beverages
Abstain from blowing your nose and try to avoid sneezing, which can increase pressure on your head; if you must do either, keep your mouth open and be as gentle as you can
Take all prescribed medications as directed
Do not attempt to open your mouth wide or hold it open to see the stitches, as it could cause tearing
Follow any dietary guidelines to aid recovery
Swelling after surgery is a normal part of the healing process. Applying an ice pack on your face near the swelling for just 10-15 minutes can help reduce swelling and pain. Some bruising is also normal, which may show up in the following days.
Your dentist will provide customized oral hygiene instructions because each situation is unique. Any prosthesis should be removed as little as possible or not at all to allow the implants to heal.
