What is Cosmetic Injectable, and how does it work?

Botulinum Neurotoxin (commonly referred to as cosmetic injectable) is a protein produced by the bacteria “Clostridium botulinum” and related species. This protein will block the release of a neurotransmitter, causing temporary paralysis when injected into a targeted muscle; as a result, the muscle is relaxed. As the muscles remain in a relaxed state, they may atrophy, thus providing longer-term relief with subsequent treatments. There are various brand names of cosmetic injectable, and these include Cosmetic Injectable®, Xeomin® and Dysport®.

How long does Cosmetic Injectable last?

Anti-wrinkle muscle relaxant injections are temporary, typically taking 2 weeks to set in, and normally lasting 3 to 6 months. A follow up appointment may be required to top up the cosmetic injectable if you are new to the treatment, and you are not sure how many units are needed.

With regular treatments, the muscle relaxant effect often lasts longer as the muscles become accustomed to being in a relaxed state. Some people can develop a resistance to cosmetic injectable treatments, but this is very rare. Each patient is unique, so your dentist will work with you to find the best treatment scheduling for your needs.

With the rise in popularity of cosmetic injectable treatments, some misconceptions still remain:

Cosmetic Injectable treatments are painful. That is not true; while this treatment is an injection with a needle, the needle is very thin, and patients often report they only feel a quick pinch at the injection site.
