In-chair versus take-home. In-chair whitening is performed in our practice using a higher-strength gel and a Zoom chairside lamp. Take-home whitening uses custom-made trays you wear over a series of nights. The two options sit at different fee points and suit different lifestyles.

The condition of your teeth. Whitening only works on natural tooth surfaces that are free of plaque, calculus, and active decay. A scale and clean is usually completed first. If your last clean was a while ago, that step may be added to your treatment plan.

Type and severity of staining. Surface staining from coffee, tea, red wine, and tobacco usually responds well to whitening. Deeper internal discolouration, often caused by certain medications or trauma, is harder to shift and may require additional treatments or alternatives such as veneers.

Top-ups and maintenance. Whitening results are not permanent. Many patients top up at home every six to twelve months to maintain the colour. Whether top-up gel is included in your initial fee is worth clarifying when you book.
