Are There Any Problems After The Extraction of My Wisdom Teeth?
Hi, Dr Jimmy here from Gisborne Dental House.
If you’re wondering what the potential risks are after getting your wisdom teeth removed, then this video is definitely for you!
Like any surgery, there are always some risks involved, and it’s important to know what they are before you move forward. For upper wisdom teeth, complications are pretty rare, but sometimes if your wisdom tooth is close to the sinus, there can be a small passageway that opens up near the roots. Another thing that can happen, though it’s uncommon, is a small piece of bone coming out with the tooth if the bone behind it is thin. But don’t worry, these things usually don’t cause long-term issues.
Lower wisdom teeth, on the other hand, can have a slightly higher risk. There’s a nerve running along your lower jaw that gives sensation to your lower lip. In some cases, the roots of the wisdom teeth can be really close to or even wrap around this nerve, which can sometimes cause temporary numbness or, very rarely, permanent numbness. This risk mainly depends on how close the roots are to the nerve.
But the good news is, these risks are generally pretty low. Especially when the procedure is done by an experienced dentist. For more complex cases, we might bring in an oral surgeon to make sure everything goes smoothly.
So, if you’re thinking about wisdom teeth removal and want to know more about the potential risks for you, just send us a DM or call us on 1800GENTLE to book a consultation. We’ve got a great range of payment plans available, and we’re always here to help!
